The national mover model is broken. A truck rental plus Mantis hourly loading labor costs a fraction of what a broker quotes you, and you control the timeline from start to finish.
Long-distance moving through a national van line broker is one of the most consistently bad consumer experiences in the service industry. A broker collects your information, sells your job to a carrier you have never heard of, and provides an estimate based on weight that is almost always understated. The actual carrier sets the final price after your belongings are loaded onto the truck. Delivery windows stretch to two or three weeks. Bills arrive higher than quoted. These are not isolated stories. They are structural outcomes of the way the national moving broker industry is organized.
Mantis does not operate through brokers. We are a local company based in Royal Oak that provides professional hourly loading labor for long-distance moves departing from Southeast Michigan. You rent a one-way truck directly from U-Haul, Penske, or Budget. You drive it to your destination. Mantis handles everything at the origin end, billed by the hour. Your truck rental cost plus Mantis loading labor is almost always a fraction of what a broker-based national mover quotes for the same origin and destination.
The math is transparent. A 26-foot one-way truck from Detroit to Nashville or Columbus runs roughly $1,500 to $2,500 depending on the time of year. Mantis loading labor for a three to four-bedroom home typically takes four to six hours. Compare that total to the national mover quotes for the same move and you will find the truck-plus-labor route comes in significantly lower, with full transparency on every cost, and with you in control of the truck and the timeline.
Most people who use a national mover for a long-distance move have never compared the actual math. Here is what changes when you book your own truck and hire Mantis for the loading.
Your truck rental is a fixed, confirmed quote from U-Haul or Penske. Your Mantis loading labor is an hourly estimate based on your home size and the items you are moving. You know both numbers before the crew shows up. There is no weight-based pricing that changes on loading day and no final invoice that surprises you after your belongings are in the truck.
When you hire a national moving broker, you are paying for their margin and a carrier you did not choose and cannot vet. Mantis is the company you talked to, the company you got the quote from, and the company that shows up at your door. There is no resale of your job and no handoff to an unknown party. You know exactly who is loading your belongings.
National movers operate on delivery windows, not delivery dates. Your belongings may arrive sometime in the next ten to fourteen days. With the truck rental model, you drive on your schedule. You arrive at your destination when you are ready and your belongings are with you the entire time. For families with school start dates, lease overlap timelines, or job start dates, this control is significant.
A truck packed for a fifteen-minute local move and a truck packed for a two-day highway drive require different loading techniques. We load for transit: heavy items strapped against the front wall, furniture padded and secured to prevent shifting, fragile pieces loaded last with extra protection, boxes interlocked and stacked to handle road vibration. Your belongings are loaded to arrive in the same condition they left Michigan.
Four steps from booking to driving away from Michigan with a professionally loaded truck.
Book your truck directly with U-Haul, Penske, or Budget. One-way rentals are available from most Southeast Michigan locations to any destination in the country. Reserve as far in advance as possible, especially for summer moves. Call us at (248) 773-4884 if you need help estimating the right truck size for your home and we will walk you through it.
Contact Mantis to schedule your loading crew for the same day you pick up your truck. Tell us your current address, your destination, your home size, and any specialty items such as pianos, safes, or large appliances. We give you a written hourly estimate and confirm a morning arrival window so you can start loading early and hit the road by midday.
The Mantis crew arrives with all equipment including blankets, furniture straps, tie-down kits, and stretch wrap. We wrap every piece of furniture, load the truck in a specific weight distribution sequence, strap large pieces to the truck walls, and protect every fragile item individually. The truck is packed to handle multi-day highway driving, not just a short local run.
Once the truck is loaded and you have walked through with us and approved the job, the Mantis portion is complete. The truck is yours. You drive on your own timeline. Your belongings arrive at the destination with you. No waiting for a carrier, no delivery window, no wondering where your furniture is. You are in control from the moment the truck leaves the driveway.
Loading for a long-distance move is different from loading for a fifteen-mile local job. Furniture that shifts on a local move is a minor inconvenience. Furniture that shifts during a twelve-hour highway drive can arrive damaged at your destination. Here is the approach we take on every long-distance loading job.
The heaviest items, dressers, armoires, refrigerators, and metal shelving, go flat against the front cab wall. The weight toward the front of the truck improves handling and stability on the highway, especially on longer routes where speed is higher and road conditions change. We do not load heavy items in the rear or stacked above lighter pieces. The sequence matters for the entire drive.
Every large piece of furniture gets strapped to the interior walls of the truck. We use cargo straps rated for the piece's weight, not bungee cords or soft ties that stretch and loosen over miles. Sofas, dressers, bed frames, and bookcases all get individually secured. A strap that is tight when the truck leaves Royal Oak will still be tight when it crosses the state line.
Framed mirrors, flat panel televisions, artwork, and ceramic items get wrapped individually in bubble wrap or moving blankets and loaded against softer items, never against hard furniture edges. If you have a mattress, it goes in a mattress bag before loading. Lamp shades travel in boxes, not loose on top of furniture. We account for every fragile item during the walkthrough before loading begins.
Boxes stacked for a local move can get away with imperfect packing. Boxes on a moving truck for two days on the interstate cannot. We stack boxes in interlocking patterns to distribute load and prevent collapse, lightest boxes on top of heaviest, and nothing stacked higher than the truck walls can support safely. Boxes with "fragile" labels face up and get placed where they will not take impact if the load shifts at all.
Refrigerators must be fully defrosted and dry before loading. Washing machines need their drums secured. Dryers need a quick interior check before they go on the truck. We handle all of this as part of the loading process. Gas and water line disconnections require a licensed tradesperson, but all appliance prep and loading from that point forward is our responsibility at the hourly rate.
The Hourly Rate Covers All Equipment
Mantis brings every strap, blanket, furniture pad, stretch wrap roll, and tie-down needed for your specific load. We do not charge separately for equipment, materials, or the additional time it takes to load a truck properly for long-distance transit. The hourly rate from the moment the crew arrives to the moment the truck is fully loaded and approved is your total.
One Important Note
Mantis Moving loads and prepares your truck in Southeast Michigan. We do not drive the truck to your destination or provide unloading services in other states. If you need professional unloading at your destination, search for a labor-only moving company in that city. Most markets have them. Call us and we will give you honest guidance on what to look for.
Underpacking a truck means leaving items behind. Overpacking a large truck wastes rental money. Here is a general guide. Call us if you are unsure and we will walk through your inventory with you.
10 to 15 Foot Truck
Studio or one-bedroom apartment. Typically covers a full bedroom set, small sofa, dining table with two chairs, and roughly thirty to forty standard boxes. Good for a single person moving light. Most rental companies offer this size with a one-way option.
16 to 20 Foot Truck
One or two-bedroom apartment, or a small house with minimal furniture. Covers two bedroom sets, a full living room, a dining set, and fifty to seventy boxes. This is the most common size for single professionals and couples moving out of Royal Oak to another state.
26 Foot Truck
Three to four-bedroom home. The largest one-way truck available from most rental companies. Covers full household contents including large sectionals, multiple bedroom sets, a full kitchen, and eighty to one hundred boxes. If you have a piano, a gun safe, or oversized furniture, account for them separately when estimating load size.
When in Doubt, Go Bigger
A truck that is 80% full drives the same as a truck that is 100% full and costs the same to rent. A truck that is 105% full means items get left behind or strapped to the outside, which is not safe on the highway. If you are between sizes, rent the larger truck. The difference in rental cost is small compared to the cost of a second trip or a damaged item because the load was too compressed.
Reserve Early for Summer Moves
One-way truck inventory from Southeast Michigan drops significantly between May and August. If you are moving out of Michigan during summer, book your truck reservation as far in advance as possible. We have seen customers lose their truck reservation a week before their move date because they waited too long. Book the truck first, then call us to schedule the loading crew.
Mantis Moving provides long distance loading labor for moves originating anywhere in Royal Oak and the surrounding Southeast Michigan area. If your move starts in one of the cities below, we can provide the crew and equipment to load your truck professionally for the highway.

I really enjoyed the service from Demetrius and his team. They packaged all my belongings, wrapped all my furniture, and brought everything into my new home neatly. They showed that they care for the job they do and make sure customers are 100% satisfied. I would highly recommend Demetrius and his crew.
Demetrius, josh and airon were magnificent from start to finish. The packing, the service — everything was on point. They move like a team, the communication through the move was beautiful. This company needs an option for 100 stars because they deserve it.
Demetrius and his crew were phenomenal! They came and wrapped up my furniture and moved it into my new house. If I could give 10 stars I would, great job fellas
